Genbyg (recycled) Design

Genbyg Design (recycled design) specializes in making furniture from upcycled building materials. In their Copenhagen workshop they create unique, functional pieces with the emphasis on sustainable design. This piece is one of my favorites, a desk made from old filing drawers and salvaged Oregon pine. Shake it.

Keating Woodworks

I am loving everything about Keating Woodworks, from his craftsmanship and attention to detail, to his tag-line “Made in the mid-west with my own bare hands”. Geoffrey Keating is a fifth-generation furniture maker, his grandfathers built churches and monasteries throughout the southwestern United States. Geoffrey worked as a roofer in Texas and a mechanic for a professional racing team before getting his graduate degrees in theology from Yale and Notre Dame. Then he decided to do what his ancestors have done and work with wood. His goal is to create furniture that is “as beautiful as it is useful.” I think he has done just that. Shake it Geoffrey.

Tribeca Bookcase

How great is this bookcase?! Brooklyn’s Ari Mossiyov designs and builds custom furniture and workspaces from reclaimed wood. You actually get to choose not only the dimensions of your piece but select the wood from reclaimed stock. The Tribeca Bookcase is a reclaimed pine wood wall system supported by steel pipes. Shake it.

Nord Chair – David Geckeler

The Nord is created by Berlin based design student David Geckeler. David says –  “Danish for nerd, geek, crank – this describes the main character and design of this chair. Made out of laminated wood assembled without any metal parts it follows the idea of concentrating on the detail and keeping the moulding process down to earth. An important technical and formal feature is that backrest and seat are only stacked together. Every part statically interacts with the other to define a solid structure of laminated shells and parts made out of solid oak wood.” Shake it .

James Plumb Suitcase Chests

Aha! You know how I love vintage beauty with unique, eco-conscious, upcycling. These charming cases can be stacked in various configurations or can be made as single units. It’s wonderful to think about the travels of each piece and yet with James Plumb‘s craftsmanship they are able to take on a second life. Plumb says…

“A selection of old suitcases are housed individually in antiqued steel and wood cases that have been tailor made in Somerset. Each set is unique with the metal framework customized to thesuitcase’s varied dimensions. Every case is carefully and painstakingly repaired and re-purposed – relined in Swedish linen ready to receive their new contents. Stacks of different numbers and different widths are available and can be commissioned.”

And now I get to say—everything that is old is new again. Shake it.

The Ledge- Urban Case

The Ledge by Seattle based Urban Case is a low profile cord management system, drawer, and pullout shelf/work surface. It is available in solid walnut, or a wonderful cherry red painted MDF. Urban Case makes quality furniture and accessories, it has been a joy to watch the company grow. Urban case was founded in 2002 by metal worker and sculptor Darin Montgomery. The Ledge made the list for best of ICFF this year by GQ. Way to shake it Darin, Urban Case is live!
