Brian Dettmer – Sculptural Book Art

Artist Brian Dettmer lives in Atlanta, GA and creates innovative and unique sculptures out of books and other forms of antiqued media. He creates them by dissecting books by sealing their edges and slowly carving out his creations. Using surgical tools he shows certain elements and hides others. I want to say more. I want to convey how much real books mean to me. Books as design elements, as personal history and as objects that hold a great deal of sentimental value to me. So that being said, he has created the perfect storm in my mind. In his words….

“The richness and depth of the book is universally respected yet often undiscovered as the monopoly of the form and relevance of the information fades over time. The book’s intended function has decreased and the form remains linear in a non-linear world. By altering physical forms of information and shifting preconceived functions, new and unexpected roles emerge.” Thank you Brian. Shake it.

Shredder – Book Art by Jonathon Whitfill

Today’s post on Jonathon Whitfill was a fun challenge. I carefully selected the images I wanted to use. Next I found the photo of the day. Finally I went back to his site to read about him, his process, his theory and uh oh! No profile or wordy art talk to weed through. Jonathon has left interpretation up to the observer. So with that I will say I love books. I keep the books I have read. I use books as design elements in my home. Jonathon Whitfill’s Shredder series thrills me. The creative use of the material, the color and the recognition of something that seems to be becoming extinct. Books are art, and Jonathon is shakin it up with his reminder of that.
