Cocoon By Mans Salomonsen

Cocoon by Måns Salomonsen is combined decoration, storage and cultivation for the kitchen window. You can grow spices and also store fruit in the organic shape—both life and color in your  kitchen. Cocoon is made of clay which absorb water from the cultivation, when it’s evaporates the storage is cooled down. I love this ides a for smaller spaces. I like to have my fruit out in a bowl for color but that often uses too much counter space and the same goes for growing herbs. This simple concept takes care of both all wrapped up in good design. Shake it Mans.

My New Headphones

I have posted about different headphones over the years that have great design. I’ve never actually owned a pair of decent headphones, so I decided to invest in some. I emailed a friend at apple who is also a DJ and he said to get Panasonics, that they’re inexpensive and have good sound quality. I found them on Amazon for $30! I got cherry red because they are now the official sodapopgirl headphones. I put them on to watch my nightly Netflix series (I’ll never tell which one) and I was blown away. A whole new world of sound. I love them. I’m shakin it.

Jeff Benroth – Glass Logs

Based in Berkeley Jeff Benroth Glass produces limited edition glass objects. My favorite are his Quartz-crystal like logs cast in glass in the form of real wood, oh my word, you know I’m smitten. The transparent glass logs are cast from a real piece of wood and each comes signed and numbered. Each log is approximately 15″ long x 4″ wide and is part of a limited edition of 50 pieces. Shake it Jeff.

Gift Shop Brooklyn – Metallic Clutches

Truth be told I wasn’t going to blog today. It’s Saturday, and then the next thing ya know I clicked on Gift Shop Brooklyn and her clutches are shiny and sparkly and awesome. I couldn’t help it — So I present to you Metallic Clutches by Annie Olean Bukhman. She of course lives in Brooklyn and handmakes all of her bags. All of her materials are sourced from the U.S. and a good portion of the supplies come from Etsy. Well I adore them. Annie certainly knows how to shake it. Happy Saturday!!

Vintage Camera Night Lights

Tonight I happened upon Jayfish’s Vintage Camera Night lights, I said out loud “YES!” Totally awesome. Jayfish converts old cameras from the 50′s and 60′s into nightlights. What’s cool is that he doesn’t modify cameras if they are in pristine condition, or are rare. He says he would rather those stay usable. The cameras he has chosen are lightweight plastic, produced in huge numbers and easily found for sale at flea markets, garage sales or ebay. Go on and Shake it Jayfish.

Ashkan Honarvar – Mixed Media

Dutch artist Ashkan Honavar‘s work tends to change drastically from series to series—some are definitely not for the squeamish and some are let’s just say a bit more risque than this one, entitled Conquest from 2011. Dee Dee (my grandma) just look at this one ok? Conquest was inspired by European colonial history. I find them luxurious, lavish and yet oddly unsettling. Ashkan’s work depicts an undeniable, unavoidable beauty by accepting the darker sides of human nature. Oh dear Ashkan I do believe you know how to shake it.

Porcelain and Leather Hanging Planters – Farah Sit

Apparently I am attracted to simple, porcelain and ceramic designs lately. I looked back through my recent posts and thought uh oh, another porcelain object with smooth, clean lines. But alas I adore this designer and want to feature her no matter—Own less and own well is Farrah Sit‘s motto. Her work has been described as “quiet minimalism”, what a lovely term. A former designer for Calvin Klein Home, she celebrates natural materials that age well, the collection combines solid wood, brass, porcelain and vegetable tan leather. Shake it Farah.

Kähler’s Cammeo Porcelain Storage Container

We have a winner! Good design + storage + bright color! All things wonderful and happy. The simple and clean design of the Cammeo containers is contrasted by colorful rubber bands that may be replaced according to your mood or space. The Cammeo containers can be used for a ton of different things. Storage for jewelry, craft supplies that can’t seem to find a home, sugar and flour, or simply use them as colorful design elements in your home. Love these. Shake it Kähler.

Brian Dettmer – Sculptural Book Art

Artist Brian Dettmer lives in Atlanta, GA and creates innovative and unique sculptures out of books and other forms of antiqued media. He creates them by dissecting books by sealing their edges and slowly carving out his creations. Using surgical tools he shows certain elements and hides others. I want to say more. I want to convey how much real books mean to me. Books as design elements, as personal history and as objects that hold a great deal of sentimental value to me. So that being said, he has created the perfect storm in my mind. In his words….

“The richness and depth of the book is universally respected yet often undiscovered as the monopoly of the form and relevance of the information fades over time. The book’s intended function has decreased and the form remains linear in a non-linear world. By altering physical forms of information and shifting preconceived functions, new and unexpected roles emerge.” Thank you Brian. Shake it.
