Geography, Typography and Yes, Helvetica

Using Helvetica Neue font, Dirk Schächter carefully positioned each letter to achieve the likeness of a conventional world map. “The typomaps are handset, and not automatically generated by a computer program. Thereby we achieve an astonishing closeness to an actual world map.” Each poster is a metre wide, so my type friends… big, colorful, helvetica! Everyone all together now say “ahhh”  Shake it Typomaps.

Ebon Heath Typographic Structures

Brooklyn-based artist Ebon Heath creates complex mobiles made out of beautiful jumbles of letters and words. In talking about his work Heath says “The structures are a physical representation of our language as object. This ‘visual noise’ permeates all aspects of modern culture, especially urban living. From the signs, billboards, stores, and t-shirts that yell with type for attention as you walk down any high street” Shake it Ebon.

Jacqueline Rabun – Letters

In London’s Belgravia can be found an old stable, inside is a magical boutique. Antique furniture, soft spotlights, and glass cases in which are the wonderful creations of Jacquline Rabun. Her letter collection is brilliant. Each three dimensional letter, number and symbol, is available in 18-carat yellow and white gold with pave diamond and silver. The weight and scale of each piece can stand alone… a simple ampersand or a special word. What a lovely gift it would be.

shake it.

Letterpress Necklaces – Erica Weiner

A work-study program at the New York Center for Book Arts uncovered something brilliant, a gold mine of old moveable iron type. Originally used on hand-cranked Vandercook Proof Presses, Erika Weiner has transfromed them into a series of delightful necklaces. Each piece of type used were worn out ever so slightly by normal printing use, and were consigned to a bin to be melted down and re-cast. These obsolete pieces (each measures a little under 1″ long) have been rescued, plated in sterling silver, or 14k gold and hung from a 22″ silver-plated brass, or 14k gold plated figaro chain. You can choose from a single hanging letter, two separate pieces, or the new combined design. Erika has an amazing Etsy shop of Jewelry. It is well worth the trip over to browse through her timeless creations. Shake it Erica.

Jen Renninger – Illustrations

Jen Renninger has a way of bringing some joy and ease to the world through her delightful illustrations. She has an amazing series of mid-century furniture drawings which I of course am in love with, but every once in a while a little Wonder and Wander is in order. Make sure to take a trip to her site pleasebestill.com to enjoy the rest of her lovely work. Now look closely at the last piece….Hello Bluebird, tweet tweet.  Ah yes, shake it Jen.

Letter Press Poster Art- Roll and Tumble Press

Roll and Tumble Press is one of my favorite etsy finds. Their prints are hand illustrated, hand carved, hand set, and hand cranked. They have a great collection of work and their bio makes it all that much better- “Charming painter turned letterpress printer + Art school dropout turned tattoo artist bond over a love of music, quirky collections and dusty junk shops. One, big, drafty house, three rescue dogs, and a chance meeting with a true old time printer…Roll & Tumble Press is born.”

Shake it.
