A Vintage Holiday With Danielle Thompson

Hallelujah! This morning I searched the web for the perfect holiday post and I found photographer, blogger, and etsy shop owner Danielle Thompson. Danielle and her two boys live in metro Atlanta, Georgia in a ranch style 3-bedroom home circa 1962. “I always want to create rooms that have a sense of nostalgia and whimsy, that always take you back to a certain time in your past and most of all, rooms that don’t take themselves too seriously” Happy holidays, and let’s shake it this new year!

Olivetti Holidays

This was a fun post to write. I learned so much about Camillo Olivetti, the founder of the Italian typewriter company, and his son Adriano. Olivetti’s goal of bringing life into the office showed in his ad campaigns, full of bold concepts and color. He pushed the idea that work could be play, and that it should always be creative. Like Nelson and Herman Miller advertising, Olivetti campaigns portrayed the workplace as a fluid environment, much more inviting to the modern worker than the prewar office, heavy and oppressive. Now that’s shakin it!

Pantone Universe Marker Sets

Apparently I can’t tire of the Pantone Universe products. Coffee mugs, christmas ornaments, posters, and now the most straight forward, marker sets! You can buy them individually and up to sets of 150, for the die hard design lover. Each marker features a soft brush tip at one end and a fine point marker tip on the other end for producing a broad range of strokes, from fine lines to wide color fills. Shake it.

EarthSeaWarrior – Lamps

EarthSeaWarrior by Ursala is a great Etsy shop I recently found. She is based in Brooklyn, New York and “specializes in the reconstruction of paleontological artifacts and industrial relics.”  I love the vintage lamps she refurbishes. She finds one of a kind lighting, rewires it and adds a colorful, cloth covered cord—revitalizing it into a unique addition to any home or office. And once again I get to say… everything that is old is new again. Shake it.

Look It’s a Jackalope!

I was shopping around Portland’s Pearl District today and stopped into EWF Modern. They have a wonderful line of home accessories, IMM Living, perfect for unique gifts. My favorite are the Jackalopes. Yes, forest creatures have been on trend for a while now—deer, owls, bunnies… but have you ever seen a jackalope? Well you have now, and I think they are adorable! Shake it IMM.

Guest Post – DIY Gifts Curated By Sarah’s Threads

Hi, my name is Sarah, I live in Portland and write a blog called Sarah’s Threads about my experiments with fashion and sewing. I have a special place in my heart for handmade gifts. Someone’s sweet fingers labored for hours to create something just for you. For any of the items I sew, I want it to look high quality. The difference between handmade and “homemade” tends to be huge. So, with the holidays hot on our heels, I wanted to share five of my favorite and free tutorials that you can whip out in an afternoon!

Cosmetic Bag – This has been one of my favorite gifts to make for friends, It is SO easy and very satisfying to complete.

Reversible Bag – Who doesn’t like a good purse that is reversible. This one is quick and easy to make.

Vintage Book E-Reader Cover – Tech people can be so hard to shop for but this project make it a little easier!

The Curbly Product Tote - Here is a great way to upcycle a favorite t-shirt into everyday use. Fill this with a beautiful fruit like clementines for a fabulous gift.

Cross Stitch Family Portrait – Leave it to Martha to find a cross stitch pattern that is too amazing to ignore. I haven’t done this yet, but plan to soon. This template and all of the little accoutrements to do the project like a embroidery loop, thread and a grid notebook would make a cute gift for a crafty friend. Don’t you think?

Follow Sarah’s Threads and Sarah on Twitter and don’t forget to shake it!

Scabby Robot

Scabby Robot is a one woman soft-goods studio based in San Francisco, California, everything is made and designed by Jill Harrell. I love the story of how her business evolved—In July 2006 she began the online shop experiment called Scabby Robot. She  began by selling silly robot illustrations: scabby robot, ear-trumpet robot, scarecrow bot, but quickly her interest in sewn 3D forms became apparent. The experiment organically grew into an online shop for handbag and wallet designs. My favorite are her wedge bags below. Check out her table at the Poppytalk Handmade Holiday Market that just opened today. Shake it.

Nama Rococo Wallpaper Studio

Yes, I blog about things I love, but every once in a while there is something I want to do back flips over—the Random Geometry Wallpaper is one of those things. It is made by Nama Rococo Wallpaper, a studio that designs handmade wallpaper. Nama Rococo wallpapers are printed by the sheet- so if you aren’t feeling ambitious enough to wallpaper an entire wall, it is spectacular framed. Nama Rococo was founded in 2006 by Karen Combs. This is what she had to say about her designs…

“We believe the ornate can exist in the contemporary as well as the baroque. You can find it in Peter Fox Shoes, the furniture of Maarten Baas, the ceramics of Hella Jongerius, the clothes of vivienne Westwood.” Oh my gosh shake it Karen Combs.

Thank you Duane King for the link.

The Aura Series by Treku

First off can I just say this is some amazing product photography. I could jump in to all three of these spaces and stay a while! Ángel Martí and Enrique Delamo have designed the Aura collection – a versatile, practical series of storage units for the company Treku. It’s modular so it can be configured in different ways and sizes. You get to choose walnut or oak and then pick from a huge selection of colors for the doors. I’m loving Treku. Shake it.
