Detroit’s new tag is the The Renaissance City—now, there are beautiful bikes created by the Detroit Bicycle Company that back that name up. Steven Brock has created five frames. He has named each after a street in Detroit. The frames are hand built and on each you may find wooden Ghisallo rims to vintage Campagnolo Record. Topped off with Cinelli and Brooks his bikes are eclectic, beautiful and creative. Have I mentioned that I love bicycles? Shake it Steven.

Reclaimed Wood Bike Rack

As you know I tend to get pretty excited about bicycles, riding mine of course, but also about their design–bikes as art. Here is the perfect way to frame your bike and hang it on the wall. The wall mounted bike rack by Cantilever and Press is made of reclaimed wood and end-cuts. They say about their design “Utilizing this rack in an apartment or room helps minimize clutter as it makes your prized bike a focal point rather than a hallway-hazard” and I say, everything that is old is new again. Victoria Saddle Bag

The Victoria Saddle Bag is designed by British designer Ian Mahaffy for English cycling brand Brooks. He combined two things I love—fashion and cycling. Mahaffy observed how women carry their handbags when cycling (I’ve been known to carry a giant messenger bag with just a wallet inside). He decided to design a bag more integrated with the bicycle, therefore, making it easier to add and remove and ultimately to ride. Add vibrant color, Brooks quality and voila! Shake it.

Icarus – Bike Love

Ian Sutton is Icarus Frames. He designed this bike to be ridden on the streets daily, but also to be suitable for track racing. It was shown in the Philly Bike Expo. I love the simple lines and the hand-carved detail. Sutton says “Icarus is now my life. Each frame is an opportunity to expand the look and design of Icarus. People aren’t stock so neither are my bikes – each one crafted for the particular client, in fit, ride characteristics and aesthetics.” Oh what a crush I have on this bike! Shake it.

The Urban Daddy Cycling Classic Makes Me Happy

As part of the E2NY Festival this summer in the Hamptons, Red Paper Heart – a collective of artists and coders who make music videos, installations and games by combining interactivity and animation – was asked to create an installation for UrbanDaddy. They proposed a bike race with a design focus, mapping forests, foxbears and orbs to the speed of the bikes, giving the rider a sense of their speed. The rides lasted 60 seconds. The faster the cyclist the farther they got unlocking multiple environments. Some even made it to space.

Since a friend shared it on twitter the other day I just keep watching it. What a fantastic ad, I can’t help but smile every time I hit play. Shake it.

I am loving Fast Boy Bicycles. The vintage feel, custom accessories, the elegant wood fenders. Frames start at $2200 and the owner Ezra gives you a few specs, but for the most part he lets the bikes sell themselves. Project Aura – Bicycle Safety Lighting System

And yet another awesome Kickstarter project -- “We created a system that requires very little rider input and maintenance, while increasing the visual footprint of bikers from all directions especially from the side. We accomplished this by expanding the surface area of light emitted through the use of RGB LEDs inside the rims of the wheels that change from red when slowing down to white when at cruising speed.”

Only the Brave features a uniquely shaped hydroformed aluminum frame, an internal cable routing for the rear brake to keep it looking clean, and will be available in Diesel Green and Matt Black versions.
