Amber Ibarreche

I love these drawings by Brooklyn artist Amber Ibarreche. Capricious magazine said this about her work: “Ibarreche’s drawings are comprised of repetitive, nearly obsessive linear marks, which are then contained by geometrical “vessels.” The results are her personal records of what she sees as infinite possibilities of time, image and space.” They caught my eye for many reasons…

mainly because I recently started making jewelry. I have found myself spending hours in bead stores staring down at huge tables of natural stones, trinkets, and crystals. How perfect the top drawing would be for above my work desk…. shake it.

Sebastion Vallejo – Mixed Media

When Capree Kimball from Maiya posted these paintings on Pinterest I let out a little gasp. Color! Sebastion Vallego was born in Puerto Rico in 1982 and now lives and paints in New York. His list of materials makes me smile…oil paint, acrylic paint, spray paint, plastic bags, fabric, glitter and color pencil. Shake it Sebastion.

Jana & JS – Street Art

One of my favorite things to research for Sodapopgirl is street art. Such a fascinating cultural and political statement. Strong, against the grain, and often full of vivid beauty and humor. This series of light hearted works is by Jana and JS. They are a creative team whose work consists of  large scale, urban pieces and acrylic/spray paints on canvas for indoor exhibitions.

“They are inspired by the city and it’s architecture constantly changing, but also by those who live it and keep it, they paint urban landscapes, simple architectural details and pictures in sets of mirrors, transparency and development abyss.” They use the stencil technique basing it solely on their photographic work. Austrian and French, they now live in Salzburg, Austria after spending some years in Madrid and Paris. Shake it.

Christopher Stott – Still Life

Contemporary realist painter Christopher Stott earned a BFA with honors and a distinguished exhibition in 2003 from the University of Saskatchewan. Stott worked in photography in the fine art department there. Immersed in the technical world of photography, he left to pursue oil painting. Stott’s work is almost object portraiture using traditional still life technique but with retro, vintage subject matter. Shake it.

Atelier Olshinsky – Buildings

Atelier Olschinsky founded in 2002 is a small creative studio based in Vienna, Austria. Peter Olschinsky and Verena Weiss are operating in various fields
such as graphic design, illustration, photography and art direction. The duo are doing some fantastic art based around the processing of architectural images, the images coming from two series simply called Cities. Yarn Bomb!

Yarn installations, yarn bombs, or yarn storms originated in the U.S. with Texas knitters trying to find a creative way to use their leftover and unfinished knitting projects, it has now moved worldwide. I just found out the start of the movement has been attributed to Magda Sayeg from Houston, who says she first got the idea in 2005 when she covered the door handle of her boutique with a custom made cozy.

Her site Knittaplease is where I first saw yarn bombing. Now, a couple years later I still can’t get enough. I love seeing yarn graffiti around my hometown of Portland, Oregon. Thank you Magda for shakin up how we think about street art.

The Artwork of Nick Lamia

When I saw Nick Lamia‘s artwork on Plastolux the other day I gasped. I love it when I find artwork that grabs ahold of me like that. Wonderful use of color and shape. Modern landscapes but with warmth and depth. “My abstract artworks are embodiments of this integration. Linear, diagrammatic structures mixed with planes of color render partial views, or fragmentary maps of imagined spaces, both miniscule and vast, where nature and technology meet. Contrast among my forms and counterintuitive color combinations are metaphors for a world where technology and ecology are in symbiosis despite their contrast.” Shake it Nick.

Brandi Strickland

Brandi Strickland is a 25 year-old collage and mixed-media artist based out of Richmond, VA. She grew up in North Carolina and graduated with a BA in studio art in 2007 from Queens University of Charlotte. “Blending the natural and the supernatural, the scenes depict a composite view of the world. a view in which our everyday experience is peeled back to reveal the sacred and unseen forces all around us. with this veil lifted, our environment is shown to be infused with spirit, manifesting as figures, patterns, and rays of energy.” Shake it.
