Aaron Moran – New Zone Structures

Aaron Moran is from BC’s lower mainland. Recently I fell in love with his geometric sculptures made of reclaimed wood. It was a pleasure  to see them so predominately featured in the art world. They are magnificent. His most recent series, New Zone Structures is a study in pattern, structure and reclaiming what has been left behind. In a recent interview with Hunted he said of his work -

“At present, the Fraser Valley is growing at a very rapid rate, meaning that housing and development is on the rise. My work literally grows out of this development as I use predominantly found materials from housing / demolition sites around my neighborhood and surrounding areas. There are entire blocks of forests and single dwelling homes getting toppled to make way for town-homes and high occupancy / close proximity condominiums. I could not help but be drawn to these lots to further investigate and what I consistently ended up finding were large stock piles of building materials (from old homes and new) left for waste. I was drawn to the beauty, history, and story of these materials and naturally began using them.”

The beautiful story of his process, and his passion for reclaiming that in which has been left behind makes me grateful to once again say —Everything that is old is new again. Thank you Aaron for shakin it.

Street Artist e1000ink – Madrid

Street artists are certainly elusive little suckers. I searched for more information on E1000ink but only found this “These pieces are by E1000 who lives in Madrid, Spain. His goal is to add colorful patterns to everyday mundane urban locations.” Love the color, the geometrics and that he isn’t trying to be Banksy. Shake it guy.

Sandra Dieckmann Illustration

Sandra Dieckmann is a freelance illustrator living and working in East London. Her work mainly evolves from nature and wildlife. My favorites pieces are her mystical illustrations of bears. Her shop is full of wonderful finds—originals works, pins, pocket mirrors, cards, iphone cases and totes. Digital Artist said of her work…

“The best folktales have a dark edge. Conversely, the best folk art pops with colour – perhaps as a visual way of whistling in the dark, perhaps a celebration of the richness of northern Europe’s storytelling tradition. Sandra Dieckmann’s nature inspired illustration has got that elusive, comfortable yet disquieting quality in spades.”  Shake it Sandra.

Julia Rothman Illustration

Julia Rothman is an illustrator located in Brooklyn. Her designs can be found on products for Urban Outfitters (I have the pillows below on my sofa) Artist Series, stationery for Hello! Lucky, and on wallpapers for Hygge & West. Her signature patterns are bold, quirky, amusing, beautiful and hand-crafted. An art teacher once said to her, “It seems like all you want to do is have fun.” Shake it Julia.

Fragmented Chronicles Ring – Shannnam

I’m not sure what it is about life in miniature that I get such a kick out of. Terrariums, modern twists on snow globes and now rings. Hong kong-based design duo shannnam showed Fragmented Chronicles at this year’s tokyo designboom mart. The collection is made up of 100 rings, each with a landscape frozen inside. “The jewelry spans different topics, from children’s characters to nuns standing in the snow, a woman walking with a suitcase to a shepherd with his sheep. each is a visual story invoking a reaction and stirring the imagination of the wearer.” Shake it.

Debbie Carlos Posters

I adore Debbie Carlos‘s photography. Last year I posted about her Human Nature Series. More recently I am coveting one of her posters—she has printed some of her favorite photos as large black and whites. I actually asked for the crystal poster for christmas. Perfect for my rocks and minerals phase! Shake it.

Thegoodmachinery – Strange Planet Animals

I have yet to figure out who the man behind Thegoodmachinery is. I know that he wears Chucks and says he likes to draw while other people sleep. He has created the perfect gift for the person who has everything—one of the strange planet animals. There are little ones and big ones and they come from Italy. Shake it.

Wood and Wool Stool Christmas

Oh my word, is it already December? I think I am supposed to start blogging about holiday stuff now—so, a couple years ago I featured Ingrid Jansen of Wood and Wool Stool‘s lovely, crochet covered stools. Love them. Now I get to show her wonderful, recycled, wooden christmas trees…

The trees are approximately 43/45 cm high and are made out of 6 different planks. There’s a small piece of string attached to the back so you can hang it. Then you can screw small hooks in the planks so that you can decorate the tree. Shake it.

Lydia Kasumi Shirreff

Stop the press. I love Lydia Kasumi Shirreff’s work. Maybe it’s from all the jewelry making I have been doing lately, but her 3D pieces inspired by rocks and minerals, thrill me. To top it off there is some sparkle going on, oh my. Shake it.
